Ferguson shares what he's led to believe about Cerny after recent Rangers display at Ibrox

Derek Ferguson has suggested that Philippe Clement has instructed Vaclav Cerny to cut inside, making him a “one-trick pony” at Rangers.

The Wolfsburg loanee has come in for criticism over the last few weeks for spurning multiple excellent scoring chances, namely in the Light Blues’ Europa League defeat to Lyon on Thursday (3 October).

While fans have grown frustrated with seeing the Czech international cut back onto his left foot when deployed on the right wing, Open Goal pundit Ferguson believes that is what Clement has urged him to do in possession.

Speaking on The Open Goal YouTube channel (3 October, 58:50) he said: “This is what I’m led to believe, the manager encourages him to come inside and play a wee give and go and strike at goal.

“But if you’re a one-trick pony, players are going to read you. You’ve got bodies in there and that’s why it’s important you mix it up.”

What has happened to Rangers attacker Vaclav Cerny at Rangers?

In his first few games as a Rangers player, Cerny showed real quality in possession that encouraged supporters he could be the difference maker in the final third of the pitch.

The winger’s ball into the penalty area for Cyriel Dessers’ goal in the Champions League qualifier against Dynamo Kyiv was superb and demonstrated just why Clement was so desperate to bring him to Glasgow this summer.

But since that game, it does feel that Cerny has become a lot easier to defend against. Every fullback knows that he is going to be looking to work the ball onto his left foot and that makes their job easy.

When the Wolfsburg winger gets it right, he can still carry a threat, but too often he is dribbling into a cul-de-sac and losing possession. Whether it was Clement telling him to do it or not, he needs to start taking some responsibility.

Hopefully, he will rediscover that magic touch in the coming weeks because the Gers will need him at their best to mount a serious challenge both in Europe and the Premiership this season.
