Ferguson tells Clement to 'Take a Chance' on Rangers-linked star as Ibrox medical scheduled

Barry Ferguson has told Rangers manager Philippe Clement to “take a chance” on Connor Barron after he was linked with a move to Ibrox this summer.

The 21-year-old midfielder is reportedly set to undergo a medical in Glasgow to become the fourth summer signing after his contract with Aberdeen expired at the end of the season [Daily Record, 12 June].

Although Go Radio punt Ferguson isn’t convinced that Barron has what it takes to improve the Gers’ midfield, he does think it is worth Clement taking the risk and paying whatever compensation fee is decided.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (13 June, 12:22) he said: “I think he’s a good young player, is he going to really strengthen the Rangers midfielder?

“It’s difficult when you play for a team like Aberdeen and you come with the pressure and the amount of stuff that is on your shoulders, the demands and expectations.

“He’s a good player, at the price I would probably go and take a chance on him because when I’ve seen Aberdeen, he’s certainly impressed me but it is a whole different ball game when you go to Rangers.”

Clement is expected to rebuild the playing squad from top to bottom in Glasgow this summer and following John Lundstram and Ryan Jack’s exits, there was always going to be a need for new central midfielders.

Most fans would have liked to have seen the Belgian sign another Mohammed Diomande or at least a more dynamic player, but on a free transfer, a move for Barron makes total sense for all parties involved in the deal.

Will he play every week in Glasgow? Probably not, but with European football hopefully on the agenda once again, the Gers will have to rotate their options week in and week out. On top of that, at 21, Barron still has plenty of room for improvement.

Hopefully, a the Light Blues will move quickly to get this one over the line ahead of the start of pre-season. Clement will want as many new faces through the door as possible before a ball is kicked in training.
