Finance Expert: Everton secure 'Win' over PL after multi-million legal development

Everton have secured a “small win” over the Premier League after recent legal developments at Goodison Park, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.

Reports emerged that the body will have to pay a portion of the legal costs issued to the Toffees for breaching profit and sustainability rules last season [The Times, 4 September].

The Blues had been billed a total of £4.9million for the legal case, but will only have to pay a total of £1.7million, with the Premier League paying the remaining £3.2million.

Although the money involved isn’t life-changing for either the club or the governing body, Plumley does admit that it is a positive development from the Toffees’ point of view.

“Certainly in the case of where the club is at,” Plumley exclusively told Goodison News.

“It’s normally always bad news rather than good news at the minute, especially over the last couple of years but this will be seen as a small win for the club.

“If you’ve managed to claw a little back on the payment of the legal fees, they’ll try and take the positives from that and move on pretty quickly will be the message from the club.”

Everton PSR update emerges at Goodison Park

There hasn’t been much good financial news in and around Goodison Park over the last couple of years, so the Toffees will almost certainly accept any small victory over the Premier League that they can get their hands on.

At points over the last few years, it has felt as though the powers at be in the top flight have treated the Blues unfairly compared to other sides in the division. While this £3.2million isn’t massive, it is a pleasant step in the right direction.

This latest legal development at Goodison Park, partnered with the loophole discovered by Leicester City to avoid a points deduction shows that the current PSR system in place in English football simply isn’t fit for purpose.

Hopefully, this could be a catalyst for change now that the Premier League themselves are out of pocket.
