Everton may still need to sell players to buy this summer as they close in on a deal for Aston Villa midfielder Tim Iroegbunam, according to Dan Plumley.

The Toffees are in advanced talks over a deal for the youngster to bolster Sean Dyche’s midfield options, despite reports they need to sell to close a hole in their PSR accounts that could lead to a potential breach and points deduction.

When asked if the reported £10million deal could mean that the financial situation at Goodison Park isn’t as bad as it seems, football finance expert Plumley admitted that it could seem “Crazy” that they are spending on players straightaway.

“This is where it gets interesting because from the outside looking in we’re looking at the numbers and what’s happened to that club and everyone is kind of saying that it seems crazy that you can then go and spend a lot on players,” he exclusively told Goodison News.

“Of course, £10million is not massive in the context of the market but it’s still a significant investment, but you’ve probably got to cover off elsewhere and I still get the feeling there’ll be one or two outgoings at Everton whether or not that’s Branthwaite or others that’s to be decided.

“But I just get the feeling that even then, logic kind of dictates that if they’re going to bring players in then they’re going to have to shift players on unless we don’t have the whole picture and they have got the ability to spend.

“I think it’s going to be a bit of a balance this summer.”

Everton are still likely to sell first-team stars

There has been a lot of speculation about the futures of Jarrad Branthwaite and Amadou Onana this summer, and it seems inevitable that at least one will leave.

Manchester United have already made their move for the defender but the Toffees are holding out for £70million [Sky Sports, 17 June], while Onana is a target for several clubs with Aston Villa growing in confidence to get a deal done [TEAMtalk, 16 June].

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite
Everton’s transfer business this summer could be defined by the future of Jarrad Branthwaite.

They are confident that they will be able to stay within the regulations before the June 30 deadline if they are preparing to splash £10million, but the financial situation at the club still isn’t the best.

If Plumley expects sales to be made then it’s likely that is the case, but it seems that Everton are ensuring that they strengthen the squad too to make sure Sean Dyche isn’t left short at the start of the campaign.

In other Everton news, Dan Friedkin could be set to sack Sean Dyche as manager once he completes his takeover of the club.
