Finance Guru speculates Everton talks with PL to decide Branthwaite & Man Utd move

Everton are likely to be in contact with the Premier League when making their decisions on the future of Jarrad Branthwaite, according to Dan Plumley.

The Toffees have rejected a £43million bid from Manchester United for the 21-year-old, with a second bid expected to be made (Daily Mail, 22 June) as the club hold out for their £70million valuation [Dharmesh Sheth, 17 June].

With Everton’s financial position precarious and sales believed to be needed before June 30th to avoid another PSR breach, football finance expert Plumley believes the club will be in conversation with the Premier League before deciding whether to accept or reject offers for their star players.

“I think it depends on the wider context of the club and I guess what I mean by that is the takeover,” he exclusively told Goodison News.

“For one, is that going to be sorted out? That gives you a bit of leeway to perhaps keep hold of your superstars. And perhaps with the wider context of where they’re at with the PSR calculations. They’ve already had two points deductions. If they’re in negotiations with the Premier League and they’re pretty clear there’s not going to be another points deduction, and we’ve not seen the numbers yet so from the outside in it’s difficult to judge exactly. But if those two things in Everton’s mind are okay, then it gives them a little bit more scope to push back on those things.

“If they’re in an absolute ‘we have to sell’ and that’s the position, then you just try and stick out a little bit longer to drive the price up. It could be somewhere in between that.

“There’s obviously a lot of things that we don’t know are going on, but it seems to be that Branthwaite, if they are going to sell him, then they’re going to make sure they get the price that they want and won’t be held to ransom on it.”

Everton can’t afford to get another PSR breach in 2024/25 season

With the Friedkin group set to come into the club and purchase Farhad Moshiri’s 94.1% stake in the club, it should be the start of a new era on the blue half of Merseyside.

They have already injected £200million into the club to pay off debts, and that will help significantly going forward with the club’s books. So getting another breach for things that happened before their reign would be a nasty reminder of the old days.

Everton should be extra careful in the coming week to avoid any problems with PSR or FFP breaches, and if their position on Branthwaite is just a bluff then they need to ensure they have a backup plan just in case.

Obviously everyone wants to keep Branthwaite at Goodison Park if they can, but there’s no guarantees it will happen and the long-term future is more important than any one player.
