Al-Duhail want to sign Idrissa Gueye once his contract with Everton expires at the end of the season, Africa Foot reports.
According to the news outlet’s website [25 November], the Qatari side are prepared to offer a “lucrative” contract, which could make Gueye one of the highest-paid Senegalese players.
The 35-year-old extended his stay at Goodison Park for another year before the season began, and his second stint on Merseyside could soon end as Al-Duhail prepare to make their move.
Everton need to move on from Idrissa Gueye
Gueye has been a mainstay in the Everton midfield since he returned from his spell at Paris Saint-Germain in 2022, but at 35, his presence in the side is part of an ongoing problem on Merseyside.
While he remains capable of producing “unbelievable” performances for the Blues, it will only be a matter of time before he hangs up the boots on an illustrious career.
Therefore, if Al-Duhail are willing to offer Gueye one final big pay-day before that time comes, Everton should not stand in his way and instead look to freshen up an ageing side.
As per Transfermarkt, the Toffees have the second-oldest squad in the Premier League this year, with an average age of 28 years old, only ‘bettered’ by West Ham United.
Seamus Coleman remains a first-team regular at 36 years old, and his recent injury woes are a stark warning to Sean Dyche that his side will continue to struggle with so many players on the wrong side of 30 playing week in and week out.
Ashley Young is closer to 40 than he is 20, while James Tarkowski, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Michael Keane are all approaching the twilight years of their respective careers and are regularly called upon by Dyche.
The growing age of the squad is a severe concern for Everton and must be addressed in the upcoming transfer windows.
Indeed, Al-Duhail’s interest in Gueye could be a blessing in disguise. It is time for both the player and club to move on.
In other Everton news, Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker agree on the call made in the Blues clash against Brentford.
