Gary Keown tells Rangers figurehead to step aside amid Ibrox debacle

Rangers chairman John Bennett should step aside as the club’s chairman if he’s not willing to communicate with fans, according to Gary Keown.

Writing in the Scottish Daily Mail‘s print edition (30 June, page 95), the journalist slammed Bennett’s “dignified silence” and pointed out that the 61-year-old hasn’t spoken publicly since September 2022, other than in annual general meetings.

Pointing out that the club still don’t know where they’ll be playing at the start of next season due to redevelopment works at Ibrox, Keown added that fans deserve better communication on the running of the club [Barry Ferguson, 22 June].

Bennett became a director at Ibrox in 2015 and chairman in April 2023, but Keown said that he should step back into a director’s role if he’s not prepared to tell fans “the what, the why, and the when” of what the Gers’ plans are going forward.

Rangers facing crucial period on and off the pitch this summer

While Keown makes a plethora of strong and valid points regarding the lack of communication from Bennett in recent years, the Gers already have plenty of changes to worry about on several fronts.

Finding a replacement for departed CEO James Bisgrove will be high on Bennett’s itinerary this summer, but there’s also the added issue of the club currently having nowhere to play in August of next season [Stephen McGowan, 22 June].

The delay in Ibrox redevelopments could well prove to be the straw that breaks the camel’s back in terms of Bennett’s post, but there’s set to be even more churn on field this summer.

Manager Philippe Clement is currently leading a massive overhaul of the Light Blues’ squad, with five first-team players having already departed, one loanee returning and another four new signings sealed [Fraser Wilson, 3 June].

It’s all change at Ibrox in nearly every single facet of the club and, for the sake of stability, the Gers may be best served by Bennett staying put to oversee the transition into a new, and hopefully successful, era.

In other Rangers news, Nils Koppen could now secure a move for Abdallah Sima after a new Brighton transfer update this summer.
