Pundit backs 'Outstanding ' Nott'm Forest star to improve Tottenham as summer transfer mooted

Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White will be looking to take the next step in his career amid transfer links with Tottenham, according to Alan Hutton.

The 24-year-old has another impressive season at the City Ground, scoring five goals and laying on a further 10 assists in 37 league appearances to help Nuno Espirito Santo’s side avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Reports had suggested that Spurs were in the leading the race to secure the midfielder’s signature this summer and now it has been suggested Forest have put a £40million price tag on his head [Football Insider, 31 May].

While Hutton isn’t convinced Ange Postecoglou needs to spend that sort of fee on another creative midfielder, he does admit that a move to North London could be appealing for Gibbs-White this summer.

“I’m not surprised they’ve put that valuation on him,” Hutton exclusively told Tottenham News.

“He’s another player who has had an outstanding season at a club where you thought they would be fighting towards the bottom and they did.

“But he always looked like that go-to guy, like Jack Grealish was at Villa, where we looked to him like go and do something that’s going to get us out of this whole we’re in and he was him.

“He stood up to the plate and again he will be looking to take his career forward and I think that is probably about right for him at this moment in time. It’s just whether Tottenham need a player in that position at the moment.

“I know he likes to play in that number 10 role where you get the best out of him because he can see a pass or score a goal.

“When James Maddison was injured Spurs did miss that bit of creativity within there. So if they can get another player in there and build for the future, it makes that squad stronger.”

Postecoglu is keen to make several changes to his squad this summer having missed out on a place in the Champions League last season, but it remains to be seen where in particular he wants to sign new players.

A new striker is believed to be on the agenda and the Lilywhites have already moved to extend Timo Werner’s loan deal, but there has been very little to suggest that a new creative midfielder is a high priority.

Tottenham do admire Gibbs-White and should the £40million valuation be within their budget this summer, they could do much worse than bring him to North London to lighten the load on Maddison’s shoulders.

A lot could depend on who leaves this summer, especially as speculation continues to swirl around Giovani Lo Celso, so this could well be one to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.
