Giovani Lo Celso transfer race winner emerges amid Premier League interest in Tottenham ace

Tottenham midfielder Giovani Lo Celso looks set to make a move to Real Betis despite enquiries from West Ham United, according to Charlie Gordon.

The Daily Express journalist posted on X (29 August) to report that Betis were “winning the race” to sign the out-of-favour Spurs star, after West Ham had asked about a possible transfer in recent days.

Lo Celso’s departure from North London is likely to run right up to the transfer deadline, with Aston Villa another Premier League side interested if the Argentine’s switch to Betis falls through late on.

The La Liga side, however, are “going all out” to bring Lo Celso back to Seville, where he played between 2018 and 2019 before joining Spurs permanently under Jose Mourinho in 2020.

Giovani Lo Celso on the brink of Tottenham transfer exit

Lo Celso’s time in North London has been up-and-down to say the least, with last season seeing him making the most Premier League appearances for the club since his initial loan spell in 2019/20.

In the interregnum of those campaigns, though, Lo Celso has twice been loaned back to LaLiga with Villarreal, making 38 appearances across a season-and-a-half with the Yellow Submarine.

Although further incomings are unlikely at Spurs before the transfer window closes at 11pm on Friday (30 August), Lo Celso is one of the players Ange Postecoglou has been keen to move on.

A return to Real Betis after five years away looks to be on the cards for the Argentine, and although a fee is yet to be disclosed, former Spurs scout Bryan King believes it will be in the ball-park of £20million.

Late interventions from Aston Villa or West Ham could see Lo Celso remain a Premier League player for the season ahead, but it seems unlikely at this stage that he’ll soon be a Betis player once again.

In other Tottenham news, a Spurs youngster is on the verge of making a loan move to League Two in search of first-team football.
