Goodison View: Dyche surely fuming at Everton as Sky Sports drop 'Big' Jarrad Branthwaite update

Sean Dyche will be absolutely clueless as to why Lee Carsley called up Everton star Jarrad Branthwaite to the England squad.

The Three Lions are set to take on Greece and Republic of Ireland in a Nations League double-header during the November international break, and the 22-year-old has travelled to St George’s Park.

After undergoing surgery during the summer, the Toffees have been without their star centre-back for much of the current Premier League season, only just coming back into the starting XI for the West Ham draw.

Dyche has been extremely careful about restoring Branthwaite to the lineup, introducing him for the final few minutes of two of the last three league matches, but now he could be in line for an international start.

However, Carsley’s England are set to make a last-minute decision on the defender before the Greece clash on Thursday 14 November, with Sky Sports News sharing a new injury update.

“The big update follows on from yesterday – Jarrad Branthwaite is still not fit enough to take part in group training. He’s instead training individually,” Ben Ransom said.

“A decision will be made tomorrow whether he is fit enough [to be in the squad against Greece] after picking up a slight injury for Everton against West Ham.”

Sky Sports later confirmed that Branthwaite is to return to Finch Farm and miss the Greece game.

Joining up with the England squad makes absolutely no sense for any of the parties involved, with Dyche now handed a brand-new worry over his star centre-back before club football resumes.

Branthwaite was a key figure for the Toffees last term, helping the team to only keep fewer clean sheets than Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal, which saw them rise to fourteenth in the league table.

Without the 22-year-old, Dyche’s side have really struggled to adapt and have looked lost at the back, so the manager must be fuming with Carsley’s decision to call up the youngster as a replacement.

England’s squad has already been decimated by injuries and have now filled one of the holes with an already-injured player, who Dyche will have just wanted to keep an eye on over the two-week break.

Now, the England staff are taking care of the player with their own interests in mind, and if he is to feature against Greece on Thursday night, he could return to Goodison Park in worse shape than when he left.

In other Everton news, the Toffees are surely regretting a 2023 transfer decision after a former player scored a hat-trick recently.
