Keith Jackson described Dujon Sterling’s performance for Rangers in the 1-1 Europa League draw with Olympiacos as “absolutely tremendous”.

The defender was brought into the Gers’ starting XI by Philippe Clement and replaced club captain James Tavernier after a run of poor performances.

Speaking on the Daily Record’s Hotline Live (7 November), journalist Jackson shared his verdict on the Englishman’s battle with Gelson Martins on Thursday.

“Sterling was absolutely tremendous against arguably Olympiacos’ biggest threat in [Gelson] Martins,” Jackson said.

“Right from the start, the two of them were having a ‘ding-dong’ and Sterling came out on top on just about every single occasion.

“He was beasting, defensively really sound as well, he was taking up great positions when Olympiacos were going forward, he was very clever in the way he defended.

“I thought Sterling was outstanding”.

Dujon Sterling has now staked his claim for Rangers right-back spot

This season, Sterling’s versatility has really been put to the test by Clement whenever he’s been available.

The former Chelsea man has played all across the pitch but was finally deployed in his more natural role of right back in their Europa League tie.

Sterling was initially brought to Ibrox to provide additional cover for Tavernier at right-back but despite the 33-year-old’s recent poor performances, Clement has been stuck in his ways with starting the veteran defender.

The fact the Belgian chose to start 25-year-old Sterling in one of the hardest games of the season was nothing short of a bold move but it’s one that seemingly paid off.

The defender is much faster on and off the ball than Tavernier and also seems to offer much more at this moment in time.

Of course, the Gers’ are lacking a clinical set-piece taker without Tavernier on the pitch but it feels like that sacrifice that the club should be willing to make in order to be more competitive in open play.

Right-back is now Sterling’s spot to lose so here’s hoping no more injuries crop up for the defender in the future.

In other Rangers news, Cyriel Dessers proved once again why he continues to make Gers fans made after what he did versus Olympiacos.
