Jordan Pickford has admitted Anthony Gordon will be “disappointed” with his penalty miss in the clash between Everton and Newcastle United.
Sean Dyche’s side picked up a valuable point against the Magpies as they drew 0-0 at Goodison Park on Saturday (5 October) with Pickford denying former teammate Gordon from the penalty spot.
Although the Toffees keeper was quick to admit he deserved credit for going the right way, he did insist that he had seen the Newcastle winger take better penalties whilst away on international duty.
As quoted by the Liverpool Echo (6 October) he said: “I just crack on with my game. I know they give me stick. I stay focused. I learnt from the past; I stay focused and I want to do my best for the badge.
“They can give me stick, I’m only up the road from them. It was an alright penalty save. It wasn’t a great pen from Ant, I would say. I think he will be disappointed, but I’ve got to back myself and go the right way, which I did.
“I didn’t say anything [to Gordon] before. I focus on my processes; I’ve got the better of him tonight. I read the pen, we move on.
“When we play for England and Ant has been here before, he’s executed pens perfectly. I fancied it tonight and luckily I went the right way.”
What happened to Jordan Pickford and Anthony Gordon at Everton?
There will always be pundits who suggest that Pickford is a liability between the posts and will cost the Toffees as many points as he wins them, but Saturday’s performance showed just how important he is to Dyche’s side.
While Gordon’s penalty was poor and lacked any real conviction, the England number one stayed tall and reacted quickly to not only keep the spot-kick out but push it away from danger as well.
Pickford’s admission that he wasn’t phased by the travelling support also shows just how much he has matured off and on the pitch.
It wasn’t too long ago that he was seemingly picking fights with the Newcastle fans both at Goodison and St James’ Park.
He isn’t the perfect keeper and he has shown already this season that he is capable of making some major errors, but the Everton stopper is one of the most important players in Dyche’s ranks.
Hopefully, he’ll produce a few more moments of magic between now and the end of the season.
