'How could I not?' - National team manager tells Rangers star to find new club

Ianis Hagi has been advised to leave Rangers by Romania manager Mircea Lucescu after what he did against Cyprus on Monday.

The 26-year-old made his first start for Romania since July on 18 November and helped them to a 4-1 win against Cyprus, providing the assist for their fourth.

Evaluating Hagi’s performance, Lucescu revealed that he has told the attacker to find a new team to ensure regular playing time.

“Yes, of course, I advised him [about his future]. How could I not? It’s not the first time”, Lucescu told a press conference, as quoted by Digi Sport [19 November].

“I also told him that I would give him this chance [to play], but he has to go to another team to actually play.

“He played well and I congratulate him.”

Lucescu cannot be blamed for advising Hagi to leave the Light Blues as not playing regularly at club level could also affect his chances of playing for Romania.

The former Genk star has been restricted to just 50 minutes of Scottish Premiership playing time this season after being frozen out in the first two months of the season.

He was notably exiled from the first team due to a contract dispute and it took pressure to convince Philippe Clement and the board to reinstate him.

Hagi also had to sacrifice a wage-rise clause in his contract to claw back into the team [Daily Record].

However, it is evident that Clement is not convinced by Hagi and it would perhaps be better for the Romania international to leave the club next year.

The son of Gheorghe Hagi, the attacker is one of the biggest names in Romanian football and it is understandable why everyone there is frustrated with the Light Blues.

It is, therefore, no surprise that Romanian media dubbed his performance against Cyprus as a slap in the face for Clement.

In other Rangers news, Clement is still “clinging” to his job at Ibrox after a new sack update dropped.
