Rangers and Philippe Clement face a “huge” week ahead after their 1-0 defeat to Kilmarnock on Sunday (20 October), according to Michael Stewart.
Speaking on BBC Sportscene (20 October) after the defeat, Stewart said that matches against FCSB, St. Mirren and Aberdeen in the next nine days will have huge ramifications for Clement’s future at Ibrox.
Clement’s side were beaten at the death by Marley Watkins’ winner at Rugby Park following a passive display, and Stewart expressed some sympathy for the Belgian.
He said: “When you’re at a big club there’s always going to be scrutiny and pressure, especially when you’re not getting results.
“I feel for him to a certain extent because I look at the squad – it’s not as strong as it was before.
“The next week is huge games, and huge potential ramifications as well – St Mirren at home, on the back of the European game that’s to come during the week, and then it’s Pittodrie.
“That really is a mouth-watering game, and it’s one that’s really going to tell us a lot in terms of how this season’s going to unfold.”
Philippe Clement could be in a race to save his job at Rangers
Clement’s previous comments about this period of the season could well come back to bite him, and the defeat to Killie will undoubtedly pile on the pressure from the 50-year-old’s doubters.
With a chance to close the gap on Celtic and Aberdeen at the top of the table following their 2-2 draw the day prior, the Gers once again showed an inability to capitalise on a golden opportunity.
The Light Blues could arguably still be playing now and wouldn’t have found the net at Rugby Park – such was the profligate nature of their performance – with Kilmarnock fully deserving of the three points.
Getting back to winning ways in Europe against FCSB, after a 4-1 thumping by Lyon at Ibrox, is crucial for Clement’s continental hopes, but the upcoming match against Aberdeen is shaping up to be huge.
Aberdeen have been this season’s surprise package so far, and having just seen them go toe-to-toe with Celtic, Gers fans will be fearing the worst about what could happen at Pittodrie.
In other Rangers news, one “beaten” Gers player was singled out by Billy Dodds during the shock defeat at Rugby Park.
