Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has defended Chelsea’s transfer strategy after flop Malang Sarr left the club for good.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Blues are “justified” with the “punts” they make in the market.
Sarr had his contract terminated at Chelsea by mutual consent earlier this week (24 July) and sealed a free transfer move to RC Lens on Friday (26 July).
The 25-year-old joined the London club from Nice on a free transfer in 2020 but made just 21 appearances during his time at Stamford Bridge.
It has been reported that Sarr was handed wages of £120,000-a-week, meaning the defender banked £24.5million during his near four-year spell at Chelsea.
Chelsea transfer strategy ‘works’ despite exit of Sarr, says Wyness
Nevertheless, Wyness insisted the Blues have had “great success” with their transfer strategy, which has seen 43 players join permanently since 2020.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I think Chelsea’s strategy has worked.
“When I used to speak to Alex Ferguson, he would say it was great if he got 50% of the transfer decisions correct.
“I couldn’t believe it, as a chief executive. I would’ve wanted more like 80-90%.
“Overall, I think Chelsea’s hit rate is above 50%.
“Malang Sarr didn’t work, I don’t know the reasons behind it – whether it was medical or mental, I have no idea.
“But they’ve had great success elsewhere. They are justified with the punts they have made.
“Usually, Chelsea make decent money from their sales.”
