Rangers will accept '£5m' Cyriel Dessers offer - McAvennie

Rangers have been told to accept a £5million offer for Nigeria international Cyriel Dessers to help ‘pay the bills’ elsewhere at the club.

That’s according to ex-Scotland striker Frank McAvennie, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the Ibrox centre-forward’s future.

Football Insider revealed earlier in the summer (July 1) that Rangers would be willing to sell Dessers for £5 million.

MLS side Atlanta United were reportedly interested in bringing Dessers over to the USA, but the forward has shut the door on any potential move.

Dessers has been a polarising figure at the Ibrox despite scoring 22 goals in 54 appearances across all competitions last season.

The forward has also been a bright spark in Rangers’ less-than-convincing start to this campaign, scoring three goals in their first five games.

“What a load of nonsense”, McAvennie told Football Insider.

“Listen, Rangers would have taken the money, they need that money. If someone offered me £5 million for (Cyriel) Dessers I’d have taken their money.

“There is no way, I mean the boy does well, he’s an honest boy but he misses so many chances and he’s had his time.

“I think he would be a good player somewhere else, I mean the pressure, it got to him last week, he was shouting at the fans.

“You could see it on the telly and it was embarrassing, telling the fans to F off, you can’t do that, it doesn’t matter who you’re with but certainly not at Celtic or Rangers.

“Rangers just couldn’t say no to that kind of money. If there was an offer, there wouldn’t have been any argument, he’d have been out the door.

“They’ve got a lot of bills to pay and that £5 million could have done that and they could have brought someone in for £1 million to do the job.

“It doesn’t make any sense to me, I think it’s more of this paper talk.”
