Newcastle United are continuing to monitor Chelsea centre-back Axel Disasi, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that this particular transfer is “one to keep an eye on” as the Magpies aim to sign a defender.
Disasi is expected to struggle to get into the Chelsea side this year due to number of defenders Enzo Maresca has, which could open the door for his exit.
It is believed that Chelsea would consider a “decent offer” for the 26-year-old before the transfer window closes, despite his contract running until 2029.
Newcastle’s sporting director Paul Mitchell is well aware of Disasi, as he was the sporting director for Monaco when the club sold him to Chelsea for £38.5million.
Newcastle United could offer Axel Disasi more game time
Eddie Howe is “desperate” to sign a central defender before the 31st August cut-off, with this being Newcastle’s number one target area in the remaining days.
The Magpies are currently without the services of Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles due to injuries, which is stretching Howe’s options.
The France international was a regular in the Chelsea squad last season, playing 31 times in the Premier League during his debut season.
Disasi didn’t feature in Chelsea’s defeat against Man City last weekend in their Premier League curtain-raiser.
However, he did start against Servette in Chelsea’s midweek Europa Conference League qualifying round win.
In other news, Newcastle fans ‘concerned’ as Sven Botman injury footage emerges.
