'I don't think...' - Tam McManus reacts to contentious moment in Rangers win v Saints

Tam McManus completely agrees with the red card call for Ianis Hagi on Sunday (6 October) but believes the Rangers man had no malice.

McManus posted on X [6 October] to deliver his view on the Romanian’s dismissal, which was confirmed by the referee following a VAR check late in the Gers’ 2-0 win over St Johnstone at Ibrox after a dangerous challenge on Benji Kimpioka.

Hagi’s 100th appearance for the club – and first in over a year – ended on a sour personal note as after moving on from a stand-off over his contract terms, he will now serve a ban.

McManus, quoting the clip posted from Premier Sports, said: “[100%] a red card but I don’t think he has [gone] in to do him, just mistimed. Can happen.”

Ianis Hagi sent off on Rangers return

Hagi has endured a rollercoaster at Rangers and just when it had seemed like his career in Govan was long finished, he was bedded back into the side.

But there was one last complication in him – you would hope it’s the last – and his red card can provoke no real argument.

The attacking midfielder will serve his suspension and look to return to the side, though Philippe Clement is hopeful several of his injured charges will be fit to return after the international break.

Luckily for Hagi’s sake, his team had already more or less wrapped up victory thanks to Vaclav Cerny’s brace at Ibrox.

It will be intriguing to see how difficult the Romania man – who featured as far as the knockout stages in Euro 2024 – could find it to force his way back into the reckoning on a sustained basis, though there is a wealth of football to be played.

The Gers next take on Kilmarnock after the internationals, before hosting a club from Hagi’s homeland, FCSB (formerly Steaua Bucharest).

In other Rangers news, a Gers player was spotted limping after the Saints win.
