Farhad Moshiri didn’t need to give John Textor exclusivity in a deal to buy Everton despite his eagerness to complete a takeover.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Everton owner perhaps believes the American businessman has a deal lined up to sell his 45-per-cent stake in Crystal Palace.
The Athletic reported on 15 August Textor has entered a period of exclusivity to buy Moshiri’s 94.1-per-cent stake at Goodison Park.
But one complication is the 58-year-old’s shares in Crystal Palace, with Premier League rules forbidding ownership of two clubs in the same division.
The Liverpool Echo reported on 15 August Moshiri’s agreement with Textor has taken some club officials by surprise.
It comes after the Merseyside giants have already seen two takeover bids collapse over the past few months, with 777 Partners and The Friedkin Group both failing to get a deal over the line.
Everton board likely to have made John Textor takeover decision
Borson suggested the decision to hand Textor exclusivity was likely made by the board.
“It doesn’t strike me on the face of it as a deal in terms of exclusivity that Everton and Moshiri needed to do,” Borson told Football Insider.
“There are some reports that giving the exclusivity has surprised a few people within the club.
“I don’t know who those people are because there is obviously a tiny board at Everton.
“I’m not sure who would be that important to be surprised, but you would assume it was a board decision to hand over exclusivity to Textor.
“But that said, I don’t understand why he needs to be given exclusivity at this stage.
“We are trying to piece it together only via the press.
“You have to assume that Moshiri believes Textor can do a deal in short order, and possibly believes that he has a deal lined up for the Crystal Palace shares that can be executed and completed quite quickly.”
