Arsenal and Liverpool have significant spending power to make new signings if they want to add to their squad before the transfer deadline.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider both Premier League clubs have “very large” profit and sustainability (PSR) surpluses despite so far being quiet in the transfer market.
Liverpool have failed to make a single new signing this summer after appointing Arne Slot as Jurgen Klopp’s successor at Anfield.
Football Insider revealed on 18 August the Merseyside giants will now wait until January to sign an A-list midfielder after their deal for Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi collapsed.
Arsenal also haven’t been very active in the transfer window, with Riccardo Calafiori’s £42million move from Bologna and a permanent deal for David Raya being their only business.
Arsenal and Liverpool could be taking transfer market breather
But Borson insists the top-flight duo’s lack of activity is likely by choice and they could just be taking a breather from the market ahead of the 30 August transfer deadline.
“There is no financial reason for it,” Borson told Football Insider.
“It’s another one of these choices.
“Arsenal and Liverpool in particular are clubs whose spending you can assume is strategic as opposed to being PSR related.
“They have very large PSR surpluses because they have effectively been well run for a number of years.
“If you were to do the modelling around what their likely PSR position looks like for both the season just gone and the current season, they look completely fine.
“They seem to have a lot of capacity to be able to make signings if they so wish.
“Therefore, you assume either for internal budgetary reasons or strategic reasons from the ownership, they just want to pause and take a breather from the market.”
