'I feel like...' - Davies makes Rangers admission after first start for new club

Ben Davies admits that playing for Rangers helped him feel “more comfortable” with the expectation of winning every game at Birmingham City.

The former Gers defender made his first start for the club on 21 September during their game against Rotherham after a suspension to Krystian Bielik forced the former Liverpool man into the starting XI.

The Blues managed to come away with a 2-0 win against the Yorkshire club and now find themselves second in the League One table, level on points with first-placed Wrexham.

Speaking about his first start for the club, Davies shared his thoughts on how his first League One start went.

“Going up to Rangers has helped me deal with that expectation and pressure of winning every game,” Davies said to Birmingham Live (23 September).

“It’s made me more comfortable with that situation. I’ve had good life experiences, plenty of football clubs and plenty of loans. I’m quite an experienced player now and I feel like I can implement that into the team.”

Rangers needed to get rid of Ben Davies in summer

Philippe Clement had a major rebuild at Ibrox over the summer window, with players across the pitch being chopped and changed.

Davies’ exit was rumoured throughout the window with the Gers and Birmingham eventually agreeing on a loan deal that saw the League One club take the 29-year-old on for the 2024/25 season.

While Davies was never the Gers’ number-one choice, he was always a constant figure within the squad.

He joined after an unsuccessful spell with Liverpool and quickly became integrated into the Rangers set-up.

Although Clement wanted rid of the former Preston man, his exit resulted in the club needing to find a suitable replacement as they found themselves fairly light at centre-back.

That’s where Robin Propper came in. The former FC Twente ace joined Rangers for a deal worth somewhere around the £2.7million mark [Daily Record, 31 July], which is a hefty fee for someone who’s 31 years old, especially when he still hasn’t managed to settle in just yet.

Only time will tell if the Gers’ gamble has paid off or if they should’ve kept the Englishman around and spent their money elsewhere.
