'I heard...' - Barry Ferguson shares what happened in Rangers dressing room after loss v Kilmarnock

Barry Ferguson heard the Rangers’ dressing room was “very quiet” after suffering a 1-0 loss to Kilmarnock on Sunday (20 October).

Philippe Clement’s side were condemned to an unexpected defeat at Rugby Park, failing to capitalise on the 2-2 draw between Celtic and Aberdeen, and now the squad’s mentality is being challenged.

The Gers had the chance to close the gap on the top two sides in the Scottish Premiership table but are now six points adrift, just one point above fourth-place Dundee United.

Writing via the Daily Record on Wednesday (23 October), Ferguson wrote: “I heard someone say the away dressing room was a very quiet place after the final whistle. Hold on a minute, a quiet place?

“If I was in there I’d be turning it upside down on the back of a defeat which could not have come at a worse moment.”

While the players may have been shocked into silence following the last-gasp defeat at Rugby Park, Clement would have wanted a much more emotional reaction from his players.

The Gers missed the perfect opportunity to pull themselves back into the title race, hoping to close the gap on their Old Firm rivals, but they could not handle the pressure.

Of course, the Killie are known for their occasional upset, especially when it comes to playing the Light Blues, but there is no excuse for dropping points against a team struggling in mid-table.

There certainly looks to be a mentality problem in Clement’s squad, and while the manager is under a mountain of pressure due to results, the players need to look at themselves.

Attention now turns to their Europa League clash against Romanian side FCSB, with a huge league clash against the Dons also to come at the end of the month, which could both make or break the Gers’ season.

In other Rangers news, Jeff Stelling left Ally McCoist in stitches after the Gers were destroyed live on air.
