Ibrox View: Rangers fans will surely fume at what Celtic player's said about cup final controversy

Rangers were denied consecutive Scottish League Cup triumphs after Vaclav Cerny should have been awarded a penalty against Celtic.

With the scoreline 3-3 at Hampden Park [15 December], Liam Scales fouled the Czech forward on the edge of the penalty area, but a spot-kick was not awarded and the Gers went on to lose the cup final, ironically, on penalties.

However, Celtic right-back Anthony Ralston has kicked Rangers while they are down and risked the wrath of the supporters after he admitted in comments relayed by the Daily Record [19 December] that he quite frankly doesn’t care about the controversy.

He said: “I don’t feel it has put any sort of dampener on our success. We’re all buzzing, we’re all extremely happy with the outcome of the game.

“We got our hands on the trophy, and that’s all we really care about to be honest, everything else is not something that we’re going to overly pay attention to. It’s not obviously our place to do that.

“From my point of view, I didn’t really look too much into it after the game. There was an on-field decision made at the time, which isn’t down to us to make as players. There wasn’t much said about it until after the game, when ultimately we’d won.

“So it’s part and parcel of football. And, I can speak on behalf of the other lads, we don’t take much to do with it, to be honest, Let the officials do that side of it. And the important thing for us is we had a job to do, which was win the trophy, which we’re all delighted that we’ve managed to do.”

SFA is a farce after VAR decision cost Rangers v Celtic

Rangers were widely expected to walk away from Hampden Park empty-handed on Sunday (15 December), but Philippe Clement’s men put up a hell of a fight.

Nedim Bajrami gave the Light Blues a one-goal lead heading into half-time, and the supporters would have felt the final win was written in the stars after Danilo equalised one minute after Nicolas Kuhn thought he won the match for Celtic in the 87th minute.

However, the Scottish Football Association has a lot to answer for after removing VAR officials Alan Muir and Frank O’Connor for this weekend’s action in a blatant admission of guilt.

SFA head chief Willie Collum has since admitted the decision was “unacceptable”, but that does nothing to ease a disgruntled Rangers fanbase who were forced to watch their Glaswegian rivals reclaim the crown as the most decorated outfit in Scottish football due to an officiating error.

Ralston had no need to twist the knife in with his post-match comments but proceeded to do so anyway – Celtic may now hold the bragging rights in Glasgow, but anyone with two eyes knows the victory will be forever tainted.

While there is a slim hope that the League Cup final could be replayed, it is a very rare occurrence – all Rangers can do now is lick their wounds and prepare to exact revenge when welcoming Celtic to Ibrox on 2 January.
