Cyriel Dessers saying that he wouldn’t be a Rangers player if he was a more prolific striker won’t go down well with the Ibrox faithful.
Speaking after the 1-1 draw with Olympiacos, as per The Rangers Review (7 November), Dessers said that if he could score three chances in every game he played, he’d likely be playing elsewhere at this stage of his career.
While the 29-year-old didn’t openly state that he’d be levels above the Gers in that scenario, such comments won’t appease a fanbase for whom the jury is still out on Dessers’ place in the side.
Dessers said: “I was watching the Champions League this week and I see unbelievable strikers miss chances. Who am I as Cyriel Dessers to not miss chances?
“You’re always going to miss more than you score – if I would score three chances every game, then I would probably not be at Rangers either.
“It is the life of a striker [that] in the first eight games, you score seven. In the next eight games, you score one or two. You want to score every game, but that’s life.”
Cyriel Dessers needs to back up his own confidence at Rangers
Dessers may have scored the equaliser in Piraeus which earned the Gers a 1-1 draw against Olympiacos, but it was only the Nigerian international’s second goal in his last 10 games for Philippe Clement’s side.
The Light Blues’ number nine does have nine goals across 19 matches in all competitions so far this term, a respectable tally for any striker and well on the way to beating the 22 he managed last season.
That tally, however, includes just three in the Scottish Premiership, with Dessers not finding the net in the league since 24 August against Ross County, with the Gers currently sat 12 points off the top of the table.
As a result of this erratic form, plenty of criticism has been steered Dessers’ way from fans and pundits alike, with many feeling Clement is forced to start the striker due to a lack of alternative options.
Danilo’s long-awaited return from injury and the steady breakthrough of Hamza Igamane provides fans with potential new heroes, but for now, they’ll look to Dessers to back up his rather hubristic comments.
