Dujon Sterling was not at his best for Rangers in their 1-1 draw with Tottenham and it may force the club to change their mind on James Tavernier’s exit.
The Gers secured another point in their 1-1 draw with Tottenham in the Europa League on 11 December where Tavernier was named in the starting XI.
Tavernier is mooted for a summer exit and the Gers may have already found his replacement although Sterling’s performance against Spurs may cause the club to reconsider their stance.
Sterling drops a stinker for Rangers against Tottenham
Tavernier has struggled at times this season while thriving at others with Sterling tipped to be his longer-term replacement.
However, an underwhelming showing in the Europa League left questions over his credentials to be that replacement.
According to FotMob, Sterling managed to complete just one pass in the 21 minutes he was on the pitch with only three attempts. His ability on the ball was non-existent and made it far harder for Rangers to take control of the game after his introduction.
That lack of influence on the ball was also showcased by his unwillingness to drive forward on the ball having not attempted a single dribble in the encounter.
Just nine touches were recorded from the right back, with two of those resulting in Spurs winning the ball back.
Defensively, he wasn’t much better. Sterling won just 50 per cent of his ground duels while winning just one aerial duel on Thursday night.
Spurs attackers were able to get the better of the 25-year-old on two further occasions when his lack of defensive awareness caused him to be dribbled past.
Sterling has in general looked like a solid option for the Gers but a lack of consistency leaves serious doubt over his credentials to be the new starting right-back.
In other Rangers news, Nedem Bajrami could be binned if Nils Koppen reignites interest in an 18-year-old winger.
