Newcastle United selling star midfielder Bruno Guimaraes would be a surprising solution to their profit and sustainability (PSR) issues.
That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it would be a negative move from the Tyneside club to sanction an exit for the Brazil international.
Newcastle were close to the PSR limit last season, with Eddie Howe’s side forced to sell Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh before the 30 June accounting deadline.
Guimaraes has been heavily linked with a move to Man City for several months, but they previously decided against activating his £100million release clause, which expired over the summer.
The Athletic’s Sam Lee reported on 7 December Newcastle could now be willing to sell the 27-year-old for £66million in January.
But it is believed Guimaraes is currently not a target for Man City heading into the mid-season window despite their desire to sign a new midfielder.
Newcastle unlikely to sell Bruno Guimaraes despite PSR concerns
Borson admitted it’s unlikely Newcastle would decide to sell the midfielder due to his importance at St James’ Park.
He told Football Insider: “The rumour is that there is interest from Newcastle in selling at £66million this time around.
“It seems unlikely to me, but it very much depends on how desperate Newcastle are from a PSR perspective.
“It does appear that Newcastle do have a need to maybe not sell, but certainly they are very tight on PSR.
“Whether they need to sell in January or whether they can wait until the June window like they did last year, we will have to see.
“Of course, there is a little bit of variability in what their end-of-year performance could be in terms of looking at their league position finish.
“We know that could swing maybe £10-12million either way, so that could be something that could cut across any problem they have got. It’s clear they don’t have a lot of leeway on PSR.
“But I would be surprised if the solution to it was to sell Guimaraes.
“That would seem to me unlikely on the footballing perspective and in terms of the signal it would send generally about their situation and their budget.
“I think it would be quite negative and I would be really surprised, but we will have to see.”
