‘I’m telling you now...’ – Gordon Dalziel shares Rangers & Scotland verdict after new question

Rangers wouldn’t have much chance of beating Scotland if the two were to hypothetically face off, Gordon Dalziel has said.

Speaking on the Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (19 November), Dalziel and Stephen O’Donnell disagreed with a question asking if the Scotland national team would be able to win the Scottish Premiership.

While O’Donnell argued that the Tartan Army’s individual quality could win out, Dalziel still backed Celtic to take the title but added that the Light Blues would be playing third fiddle in any case.

Dalziel said: “I’ll tell you what, I think they would be second and Celtic would win it.”

O’Donnell replied: “So he thinks Rangers would be third, is that what you’re saying?”

Dalziel hit straight back, saying: “Oh Rangers aren’t beating that side, I’m telling you now.”

Rangers would be reeling if they faced an in-form Scotland side

Although the Gers’ best performances this season have arguably come outside of domestic competition, it doesn’t bear thinking about the levels they’d need to reach if they were to beat Scotland at present.

The Tartan Army have won their past two games with late goals from John McGinn and Andy Robertson, and overcoming players of such an ilk would be a tough, tough ask for Philippe Clement’s new-look side.

One player currently excelling in Scotland colours is John Souttar, who has established himself as a regular for club and country and has been arguably the most consistent Gers player this season.

Both sides would miss Souttar significantly in the hearts of their defences, but the fact that the 28-year-old is the only Bears player getting regular minutes for Scotland shows that they’re currently in a low ebb.

It remains to be seen how much progress the Gers and Scotland will make before the end of the season, and Clement should take a leaf out of Steve Clarke’s book as he aims to turn his side’s form around.

In other Rangers news, the club’s latest internal boardroom appointment shows a lack of ambition from Ibrox decision-makers.
