Andy Walker hasn’t been impressed with the recent transfer business at Rangers, with Nils Koppen being appointed as the technical director.
The 39-year-old joined the Gers earlier this year as the director of football recruitment and has been given more authority now [BBC, 19 November].
Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show Podcast [19 November], Walker shared his thoughts over the bump in the role that Koppen has been given.
“I think what matters is the type of player, the value for money that you bring in. And he’s been there a while. I’m assuming he’s got a good understanding and relationship with Philippe Clement. They would have to be in tune with one another.
“But recent business has been so unimpressive. I just wonder what Rangers supporters think of it.”
Nils Koppen hasn’t done enough at Rangers
Rangers are currently struggling in the Scottish Premiership, with the team third in the table, nine points behind leaders Celtic and Aberdeen.
Off the pitch, the Gers have been unstable, with various positions in the boardroom vacant.
The Light Blues are without a CEO, and John Gilligan has been acting as the interim chairman, although the club does look devoid of leadership considering their situation.
Philippe Clement has been under pressure at the club this season after a poor start, and the Belgian’s tenure at Ibrox looks fragile at best.
The former Monaco manager wasn’t helped with the recruitment in the previous transfer window, though, with most of the new signings underwhelming so far.
Koppen also failed to address the goalscoring issue at the Light Blues, signing Hamza Igamane this summer, who clearly needs time to adapt and develop before being relied upon.
Cyriel Dessers runs hot and cold, and Danilo has been on the sidelines for significant periods.
The stakeholders in the Bears need to make drastic changes in the coming months, but Koppen’s appointment as technical director shows that they don’t have the appetite for it.
In other Rangers news, Albanian media reacted to Nedim Bajrami’s performance against Ukraine.
