Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan claims the club will sign a new right-back imminently amid links to Rangers defender James Tavernier.

Dogan admitted that Thomas Meunier’s exit meant that they will opt for their Plan B and sign a new right-back as soon as possible.

The Daily Record quoted him on 19 July as saying that a replacement for the Belgian could be signed as soon as this week.

He said: “Our plan B (after Meunier’s departure) was ready and we took action immediately. Our new right-back will arrive in a day or two. Our only thought is to create a team that makes the fans happy, stands tall on the field and fights. Our fans should not worry. Trabzonspor will fight for the top.

“Today or tomorrow, Trabzonspor will complete the right-back transfer. We are planning to make 5-6 more transfers. We aim to complete 2-3 of them in the next 2-3 days.”

Rangers must get the right money for James Tavernier

Dogan’s recent comments about Trabzonspor’s imminent signing of a new right-back appear to be a strategic move to pressure Gers into selling Tavernier.

By publicly announcing that a replacement for Meunier is close to being finalised, the chief is implying that the Turkish club have viable alternatives to Tavernier, potentially weakening Gers’ bargaining position.

However, Gers must not be swayed by these tactics and should hold firm on their valuation of Tavernier.

The club must ensure that any sale of their captain is at a price that reflects his value to the team and the potential impact of his departure.

Rangers should not be bullied into selling Tavernier on the cheap, especially considering the leadership and goal-scoring prowess he brings to the team.

By standing their ground, they can demonstrate their financial prudence and strategic planning, setting a precedent for future negotiations.
