Mick McCarthy raised the example of Rangers and Celtic as he slammed the “incredibly unfair” decisions that went against Wolves.
Veteran manager McCarthy was asked about a number of contentious calls that went against his former side in their 2-1 loss to West Ham United in the Premier League on Monday (9 December).
The 65-year-old suggested certain clubs get favourable treatment, as is the case for Rangers and another of his former sides in Celtic.
“Both you and I know those decisions even each other out over the course of the season is complete nonsense,” he told Ally McCoist on talkSPORT Breakfast [10 December, 8:11am].
“Put it this way, I’m Celtic and you’re Rangers… we get more decisions than the other teams in the league. Not on purpose, but we all know it happens. It’s incredibly unfair.”
Rangers fans will strongly disagree with Mick McCarthy
The honest truth is every club feels wronged when it comes to refereeing decisions. For every one decision in your side’s favour, five go the other way.
Rangers, and indeed Celtic, have had this accusation thrown at them many times before down the years – and very much still to this day. It’s now just second nature.
But it is funny how all the terrible decisions given against the Gers do not really tend to be cited as examples in the opposite direction.
As for this particular example involving West Ham and Wolves, McCarthy does have a point. Wolves were robbed by the referee.
One of West Ham’s goals should not have stood, while Wolves also had a penalty shout turned down.
To drag Rangers into this argument is just silly, though. And to accuse officials of showing bias to one team over another is simply wrong.
