Philippe Clement may survive the Rangers sack because of how dysfunctional it is behind the scenes, believes John McGarry.
The Daily Mail journalist stated on 31 October that if there is a sacking to be carried out, nobody is sure who will be the main person to make that decision.
Currently, there is no chief executive, no permanent chairman and no director of football operations as well.
He wrote on 31 October: “For Clement to be sitting nine points adrift of the champions would be bad enough. The fact Aberdeen are also ahead of his side by that margin reflects horrendously on him.
“He might actually be surviving right now partly because the club has become so dysfunctional. There remains no chief executive, no permanent chairman and no director of football operations.
“If there is a sacking to be carried out, no one is quite sure who would do the deed. It’s a bin fire.
“Nothing sums up Rangers’ muddled thinking more than the club’s decision to give Clement an improved and extended contract through to 2028 at the outset of this season.”
John Gilligan can surely make the decision to fire Philippe Clement at Rangers
Despite the dysfunction at Ibrox, with positions like chief executive, the ultimate decision-making authority likely still rests with John Gilligan as the interim chairman.
If Clement’s position is under review, Gilligan, as a high-ranking official, would presumably have the power to decide on his future, especially given the lack of other permanent senior figures.
This situation highlights the significant responsibility on Gilligan’s shoulders, as the onus falls on him to make critical calls like Clement’s potential dismissal.
While the club’s operational structure might be in disarray, the necessity for decisive action in such a scenario would typically fall to the interim chairman, illustrating that despite the organisational chaos, there remains a clear line of command for major decisions like managerial changes.
The game against Motherwell may perhaps be the last straw and defeat in that could leave the hierarchy with no other option than to part ways with their underperforming Belgian manager.
In other Rangers news, the club now need to pay a sizeable fee in order to hire an award-winning manager to replace Philippe Clement.
