Rangers have a major problem on their hands after signing up for a permanent deal to buy the injury-prone Oscar Cortes, says Derek Ferguson.
The Light Blues agreed loan-to-buy obligation with Lens in the summer to bring the Colombian winger back to Ibrox, after his initial loan last season was cut short after just seven games.
But it has been more of the same this term as he has played just three times in all competitions, getting hurt in the season opener at Hearts on 3 August and then almost immediately again in September upon his return, and has been out since.
Ferguson previously suggested on Open Goal on 10 October that he thought it could be as much as a four-month lay-off for the wide man, and with no news of a comeback past the 20-year-old posting an image of himself doing work in the gym on his Instagram stories on Friday (15 November) the ex-Ibrox midfielder is worried about the prospect of spending significant money on yet another player blighted by fitness issues.
Rangers are thought to be on the hook for around £4million for Cortes [The Herald, 1 July], having got 10 appearances out of him since January.
But despite the ongoing injury concerns at the wing position Ferguson does not want to see Philippe Clement turn to Ryan Kent for a Gers comeback.
Rangers warned off Ryan Kent return as Philippe Clement deals with injuries
Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News: “I’ve not heard anything [about a return], I don’t think he’s even back training. I know [Ridvan] Yilmaz is back doing bits and bobs, and [Tom] Lawrence is obviously injured again.
“But no, Cortes, it’s been a catalogue of injuries. It’s been the story of Rangers, at the moment.
“I’ve mentioned Yilmaz because he’s the exact same. He’s come in there, he constantly picks up niggles.
“Cortes has come in and it was a hamstring initially, then it was a knee problem, but it’s amazing how long these players are taking, in my opinion, how long it’s taking them to get back to fitness.
“That’s a real worry, because Cortes, we’ve got to buy him. We’ve got to fork out about £4million in the summer. We’ve signed up for that.
“So what we’re probably getting, at the moment, is a player who unfortunately looks injury-prone. In the flashes he’s produced you can see, yeah, there’s a player there.
“But there again, with other teams you look at the players in the forward areas, the flair players, the guys that make a difference, these guys are playing 90 per cent of the games. Some of our boys are nowhere near that.
“Cortes is a big worry, and the worry is that we’ve got to sign him. So I get that [in that context] talking about Kent, but nah his mentality is way off it. But it’s a worry with Cortes.”
In other Rangers news, overwhelming evidence is now starting to point to a new manager making his way to Ibrox.
