'It's going to happen' - International ace who is now available reacts to Rangers speculation

Scott McKenna is not surprised that he has been linked to a Rangers or a Celtic move, admitting that friends who support the clubs have already been asking him about the possibility.

The former Nottingham Forest defender has been tipped for both the Light Blues and their Old Firm rivals after leaving the Premier League club on a free transfer, but says there haven’t yet been any contract talks over his next move.

He is focused on going to Euro 2024 with Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad first but is ruling no options out over where he might sign.

McKenna said, via the Scottish Sun (12 June): “I am open to anything. I would never rule anything out. But in terms of the speculation, that’s all it’s ever been.

“It has never really gone any further than that, and until there is anything that’s more than that I don’t really have anything to think about.

“There have been no contract talks anywhere really. My sole focus is to try to get as many minutes as I can here with Scotland if the opportunity arises — and there’s no bigger shop window than this…

“[Old Firm speculation] is just natural when you have got teams the size of Celtic and Rangers. I know a lot of people who support both teams, so it is going to happen, they are going to question you. But there is nothing to tell.”

Defender linked to Rangers and Celtic after Nottingham Forest exit

Philippe Clement has already focused on his defence significantly before the transfer window officially opens, securing deals for left-back Jefte and young central defender Clinton Nsiala.

But the latter has yet to play a senior game at AC Milan so a more senior arrival at the position still would be no surprise, despite the contact extension for Leon Balogun.

Connor Goldson’s shaky form last season helped continue a lack of stability which has plagued the Rangers back line for a number of seasons, with injuries and form contributing to constant changes.

The likes of Ben Davies and Leon King could leave the club this summer as Clement stages yet another Gers overhaul.

Rangers Philippe Clement
Philippe Clement’s summer overhaul is already well underway at Rangers.

But in a head-to-head race to bring in McKenna, 27, links to Celtic have long been stronger and it would be little shock if he ended up at Parkhead rather than Ibrox.

As a free transfer he could easily be of some interest to Clement and Nils Koppen since the pair have a lot of work to do and may not have a huge budget, but it doesn’t look like there will be any movement on the ex-Forest man, who spent the second half of last season on loan at FC Copenhagen, until after the Euros at least.

In other Rangers news, there has been some “brilliant news” for the Light Blues regarding their best player ahead of the transfer window.
