Man City will “bend over backwards” to keep Pep Guardiola at the club as talks accelerate over a potential contract extension at the Etihad.
This is according to former Man United chief scout and former Sir Alex Ferguson number two Mick Brown, as he exclusively told Football Insider that Guardiola would be equally keen on extending his stay and is not looking to leave as things stand.
Uncertainty surrounding the manager’s future has been growing amid a complicated situation at City, and his current deal is set to run until the end of the current season.
Off-field issues including the beginning of their hearing for the 115 charges levelled against the club for financial breaches had contributed to the speculation about his exit.
Guardiola had also been heavily linked to the England job, and was reportedly the FA’s number one candidate for the role before the appointment of Thomas Tuchel.
On top of that, a number of key stars including Kevin de Bruyne have been linked with moves away from City as they are coming towards the end of their time at the Etihad.
Despite all of this, it now looks likely that the boss will agree to extend his stay, with an agreement over a potential one-year deal growing increasingly likely.
Man City pushing to agree Pep Guardiola contract extension
Brown previously told Football Insider that Guardiola had used speculation surrounding his links to the England job to land a new deal at the Etihad.
Now, the former scout who remains very well-connected within the game, has insisted that City are closing in on an agreement behind the scenes.
“It’s massive news for City,” he told Football Insider.
“He’s always said that if anything went against the club with the 115 charges then he would walk away, so that’s always in the back of their minds.
“Man City are going to bend over backwards to keep him in charge.
“I’ve heard he’s keen on doing an extra year. If they win the league this year it’ll be five on the trot, and to make it six would clearly be an incentive.
“Why would Pep Guardiola want to leave Manchester City? The only reason, other than the charges, would be if he wants a break.
“But he’s not been showing any signs of that and I’d expect him to commit his future to the club.”
In other news, City are expected to sign the “world’s biggest stars” after Guardiola update.
