Exclusive: Arsenal nearly signed 'mystery German' - deal could still happen

Arsenal are interested in signing Bayern Munich star Leroy Sane after missing out on a sensational summer deal, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, Football Insider journalist Connor Humm revealed that the 28-year-old was the “mystery German” the Gunners had attempted to sign in the summer before the deal fell through.

Sane has less than a year remaining on his contract in Munich and is set to become available for talks over a free transfer in 2025.

Squad depth on the right-hand side has been a recurring issue for Mikel Arteta’s side, with Bukayo Saka tasked with starting the majority of games due to a lack of sufficient cover.

Raheem Sterling’s arrival in the summer has helped improve that depth, but there is a feeling at the Emirates that Sane’s arrival would add experience and quality to their squad.

As a result, the club are weighing up a move to sign him upon the expiry of his contract with Bayern Munich after failing to find an agreement in the previous transfer window.

Sane joined Bayern from Man City in 2020, having lifted two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups during his time in Manchester.

That winning experience and time in the Premier League is considered a bonus for the Gunners who are looking to strengthen their own title chances.

Since the move to Germany, the winger has lifted three Bundesliga titles and the Club World Cup, having made 181 appearances for the club.

During that time, he has scored 49 goals and provided 50 assists, proving that his end product has yet to slow down.

He is seen as an ideal option to play either alongside or in rotation with Bukayo Saka, with his ability to play on the left-hand side adding to the Gunners’ interest.

Arsenal are not expected to be alone in their pursuit of the winger, but have been backed to explore the possibility of a deal in the January transfer window.

Football Insider revealed on 15 September that Newcastle have also been interested in signing Sane when he becomes available on a free transfer.
