Kris Boyd has questioned the Rangers academy set-up after Nils Koppen revealed plans for his new role as technical director at Ibrox.
The 39-year-old has been promoted from his role as director of recruitment for the Gers which will see him deal with new assets such as the academy as well as the club’s transfer strategy.
The Belgian has suggested a plan “to improve, take steps and keep on creating room for our own academy players to take the step to the first team” [Daily Record].
Ex-Light Blues star Boyd isn’t sold on this vision from Koppen and questioned the director speaking to
The Scottish Sun SPORT on 19 November.
He said: “It’s not good enough. Everybody gets caught up in this ‘We haven’t got any youth players coming through’, at the end of the day, you need to be good enough to come through, if you’re not then you’re not going to make it.
“If you go through the players who have come through the Rangers academy and go right back to the Barry Ferguson days, you had to be exceptional or you weren’t going to get an opportunity.
“So this whole thing of there being more emphasis to bring more players through from the academy, it should be a given anyway. The thing is, if they aren’t good enough, you’ve got to look at other things. Is the coaching at the level it should be? That I don’t know.”
Kris Boyd questions Rangers academy after Nils Koppen plan
The new technical director at Ibrox has grand plans for his spell in his new role but supporters wouldn’t be blamed for having any reservations.
One of the main goals for the Belgian appears to be to fill empty roles within the academy to increase the productivity at the club.
There has been a general lack of stars coming from the Light Blues in recent years with chances few and far between for graduates.
This points towards a general problem at the club where youngsters coming through aren’t necessarily good enough and as a result, aren’t earning the chances to impress for the first team. A vicious circle.
If this process can be turned around and more youngsters can come through the set-up and either become regulars at Ibrox or sold on, the club will be much better off.
This could make Philippe Clement’s side better on the pitch and off it as these sales can give the club financial security that they don’t have right now.
The ambition is there from Koppen but supporters will join Boyd in holding out before getting too excited about the future.
In other Rangers news, a possible Philippe Clement exit could be celebrated as Belgium pay-off has been mooted.
