Chris Sutton has told Everton they should stand by Sean Dyche if they want to avoid relegation this season after the draw with Leicester City.
The Toffees’ winless start to the Premier League season was extended to five games on Saturday (21 September) as Iliman Ndiaye’s first-half strike helped the Blues come away with a 1-1 draw.
Although some fans have called for a change in the dugout after Dyche’s side let yet another lead slip, BBC Sport pundit Sutton has suggested keeping the Burnley boss will mean that they remain in the top flight.
Speaking on BBC Sport Five Live on Saturday (21 September, 19:43) he said: “I think it’s quite simple.
“I think if Sean Dyche stays, Everton stay up. You know what you’re going to get with Sean Dyche, he’s working with a limited squad and you can get some fanciful manager in and think there’s going to be a great turnaround in the way that Everton play.
“If you look at last season, you get [Jarrad] Branthwaite back in then I think things will improve.”
Will Everton sack Sean Dyche after draw v Leicester City?
Toffees supporters are understandably frustrated after the Blues let another lead slip this season, but picking up a point against the Foxes does feel as though it is a step in the right direction for Everton this season.
Dyche’s side was still far from perfect, but had they been more clinical in the final third they could well have been leaving the King Power with three points under their belt and their season up and running.
As Sutton suggests, the imminent return of Branthwaite will be a massive boost for the former Burnley boss as the England international was the Blues’ best player last term as he formed an excellent partnership with James Tarkowski.
If Dyche can get the 22-year-old back fit and firing in Toffees colours sooner rather than later, it shouldn’t be too long before Everton manage to pick up that first win in the league.
Once the monkey is off of their back, talk around Dyche’s future on Merseyside will almost certainly quickly die down.
