Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has warned Rangers face a “death spiral” if they sell off too many of their best players.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the Ibrox club “need the cash” with captain James Tavernier attracting interest from abroad.
Football Insider has revealed (13 November) that Rangers are planning to offload Tavernier, 33, and find a replacement signing as early as January – with both parties have deciding it is time to move on.
Clubs in Saudi Arabia and Turkey have previously shown an interest in the Englishman, who has played every game for Philippe Clement’s side this term.
Tavernier’s current contract runs until 2026.
He has spent more than nine years at Ibrox, making 479 appearances since the move from Wigan in 2015 – notching 126 goals and 132 assists in the process.
Rangers’ recent financial results have underscored the need to potentially cash in on some of their top players, with the club posting losses of £17.2million for the 2023-24 campaign.
‘Rangers need the cash’ – but Tavernier sale could cause ‘death spiral’, says Wyness
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Rangers do need the cash.
“Any asset they’ve got who is sellable, they should look at selling.
“But it weakens the squad even further.
“It’s a classic football dilemma. You’re starting to see the downwards spiral, and it could become a death spiral if you sell too much.
“It happens very quickly once you’re in it.
“Rangers have got to be very careful about this. That’s why I hope negotiations are going on to recapitalise this club and really make it secure once again.”
