Rangers, Hull City and Preston North End all made last-gasp attempts in the transfer window to sign Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland, according to HITC.

The news outlet reported on 3 September that while the 29-year-old stayed put at Tynecastle a January transfer may be on the cards.

Hearts wanted over £3million for the Scotland international but with less than a year left on his deal, no side was willing to shell out that kind of money.

Rangers can re-enter race to sign Lawrence Shankland in January

Gers’ hesitation in meeting Hearts’ £3million+ valuation for Shankland, coupled with his contract situation, provides them with a strategic advantage looking towards January.

With the 29-year-old’s deal expiring at the end of the season and no new contract in sight, his transfer fee could significantly decrease, making him a more financially viable option.

This delay gives Rangers additional time to assess their squad’s performance, particularly their striking options, without the immediate financial commitment.

If Shankland continues his scoring form, his value as a proven goal scorer in the Scottish Premiership will only reinforce his appeal.

By January, if the Ibrox outfit find themselves needing a striker, the Scotland international could be available at a reduced cost, potentially aligning with their budget while still offering the quality needed to bolster their title challenge.

This scenario not only potentially saves money but also ensures they’re investing in a player whose form and fit within their system have been further evaluated.

In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton has savaged a senior figure at the club as he’s gone on a ‘Mad Rant’ about the situation.
