Gareth Southgate is unlikely to jump at the chance to become Everton manager until Dan Friedkin takes complete control of the club, Graeme Bailey has said.

The former England manager has been identified as a potential successor to Sean Dyche, though Friedkin has not yet made a decision at Goodison Park [GiveMeSport].

With Dyche said to be entering a “key period”, his days on Merseyside could be numbered as The Guardian [24 September] suggest the takeover process could be completed within six to eight weeks.

Speaking to Everton News on Wednesday (25 September), Bailey said: “‘I’m not saying that Southgate isn’t on Friedkin’s mind, but I think he’d be someone more long-term who Friedkin would like.

“As I said, the current thinking is short-term. That’s not to say that Southgate couldn’t come in. Southgate is in the Manchester United thinking as well, and Southgate knows that.

“I don’t see Southgate jumping into Everton that quickly, not without Friedkin being properly at the helm.”

Gareth Southgate to become the new Everton manager?

Few Evertonians have taken the Southgate rumours very seriously, but many fans are worried about Dyche’s future as the team continue to falter in the new Premier League campaign.

The Toffees claimed their first point of the new season in a 1-1 draw with Leicester City on Saturday 21 September, seeing them lift off the bottom of the table.

Dyche has come under an immense amount of pressure, mainly due to the back-to-back 3-2 comeback defeats to Bournemouth and Aston Villa, with the manner of the losses slated.

Though he has worked wonders during his time at Goodison Park, Dyche is slowly running out of time to turn things around before another manager, such as Southgate, is brought in to handle the current mess.

Southgate has little experience at club level, having been with England for eight years, but Friedkin is clearly impressed by his leadership shown on the international stage.
