Journalist shares 'Surprise' verdict after new international call for Rangers player today

Alan Nixon has insisted that Rangers midfielder Connor Barron replacing Che Adams in the Scotland national squad is a “Surprise”.

The Sun journalist reported via his Patreon page (3 September) that with Adams ruled out of the UEFA Nations League matches against Poland and Portugal, Steve Clarke opted for Barron

Clarke was said to want “an extra body” in his squad regardless of Barron’s different position, with the call-up now confirmed by Scotland on X.

Nixon said: “Che Adams is out of the Scotland squad for the Nations League double-header – with Rangers new boy Connor Barron the surprise replacement.”

Connor Barron earns Scotland call after strong form for Rangers

Barron, 22, has started six of the Light Blues’ seven games in all competitions so far this season since arriving on a free transfer from Aberdeen, including the 3-0 Old Firm loss to Celtic last time out.

Philippe Clement’s side have had a mixed start to the new season – compounded by that embarrassing 3-0 reverse at Parkhead on 1 September – but Barron has undoubtedly been one of the few silver linings.

It’s easy for a free transfer to look like a steal, but the 22-year-old has been more than that already to become a staple on the team sheet as a key figure.

Starting alongside a whole host of different partners at the base of midfield, Barron has been a constant and looks like keeping hold of the number eight shirt for several years to come.

That too could prove to be the case for the Tartan Army, but this will surely have to come in time with John McGinn, Scott McTominay, Kenny McLean and Billy Gilmour occupying those.

It’s somewhat unlikely that Barron will make his international debut in the next two weeks, but time spent in the Scotland set-up will surely be beneficial for a player who has made a flying start to life at Ibrox.

In other Rangers news, Ally McCoist was reminded of a worrying factor behind the club’s past successes after their 3-0 loss to Celtic.
