Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers responded after being groaned at by the Hampden Park crowd in the second half v Dynamo Kyiv, according to Jordan Campbell.
The Athletic journalist posted on X (13 August) after he spotted Dessers having a go back at the Gers support after they groaned “a bit harshly” during a failed piece of link-up play with Tom Lawrence.
Dessers had attempted to lay the ball off to Lawrence on the edge of the box after it was played into his chest, but the move not coming off resulted in a chorus of groans from the frustrated home crowd.
Philippe Clement selected Dessers to lead the line, but the Nigerian drew a blank in a game in which Jefte was controversially sent off in a 2-0 loss to Dynamo in Champions League qualifying.
“Dessers having a prolonged go at the Rangers support after they groan (this time a bit harshly) for trying to lay off to Lawrence when a ball was played into his chest,” Campbell posted.
Cyriel Dessers frustrations boil over for Rangers v Dynamo Kyiv
This was a hugely frustrating 2-0 loss which consigns the Gers to Europa League football this season, and emotions were understandably running high.
Dessers’ last-minute equalising goal may have kept the Light Blues in the tie in Lublin last week, but Dessers had no such opportunity to rescue his side this time around as the hosts faltered at Hampden.
While Jefte’s sending off did prove to be a turning point for both the Gers and Dynamo, Dessers drawing groans and jeers from his own fans is another clear sign of his divisive reputation at Ibrox.
Many fans would likely be over the moon if the 29-year-old was sold tomorrow [Chris Jack, 5 August], but that would leave Clement without any first-team-ready strikers at his disposal as the new season continues at pace.
Unfortunately for Clement, the transfer policy appears to be sell-to-buy, and in order to secure a tried-and-tested upgrade on his number nine, the Belgian may first have to usher Dessers out of the door.
As for now, Gers fans will have to put up with countless more frustrating games for the striker.
