Wenham expects Tottenham player to seal permanent exit after 'Strange' July announcement

John Wenham is hopeful that Bryan Gil will be sold permanently by Tottenham next summer after the forward secured a loan move to Girona.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose doesn’t understand why the North London club have not provided an update on the 23-year-old’s contractual situation.

As reported by Fabrizio Romano via X (29 July), Gil has signed a contract extension with Tottenham which includes a £12.8million release clause.

Following that news, the club announced via their official website (29 July) that the forward had joined Girona on a season-long loan. However, the announcement did not make any mention of the contract extension.

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has been left confused by the transfer saga.

“I found that all a bit strange,” Wenham said.

“To add more confusion to the situation, when Tottenham announced the loan, they didn’t announce anything about this new contract.

“However, I am sure Romano is right with the information he put out as that makes sense from Spurs’ point of view. Hopefully, Gil plays a lot for Girona which increases his market value.

“That will hopefully lead to us getting the £12.8million fee for him because he has no future at Tottenham.”

Bryan Gil to seal a permanent exit from the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium?

Gil’s move to North London has been far from a success. The Spaniard has struggled to adapt to life in the Premier League and has been spent back to La Liga on loan on three separate occasions as a result.

It seems inevitable that he will be sold by Tottenham. Therefore, supporters were most likely confused to read that he was signing a brand-new contract with the club.

It appears a strange decision from Tottenham’s point of view. Should Gil have a sensational season in Spain, the £12.8million release clause might suddenly become a steal and Spurs will have no room to negotiate.

Whichever way this situation plays out, it appears as though one thing is certain, and that is that Gil’s future lies away from North London.

In other Tottenham news, behind the scenes “trouble” is slowing down a brand-new transfer at the club.
