Journalist tells Everton man he must make 'big impression' at Goodison in new exit verdict

Chris Beesley has shared a new Nathan Patterson exit verdict, admitting the defender will have to make a “big impression” this season to stay at Everton.

The Scottish defender is yet to play for the Toffees so far this term having picked up an injury in the second half of last season, which also kept him out of this summer’s Euros.

While the right-back is believed to be close to a first-team return, Liverpool Echo journalist Beesley believes he still has a lot of work to do if he wants to secure his future at Goodison Park.

Speaking on the Royal Blue YouTube channel (14 October, 40:10) he said: “Although Sean Dyche says all the right things publically, first of all, unfortunately, Nathan Patterson has suffered a lot of injuries since he’s come to the club.

“If you tot it up, he’s possibly missed more football than he’s been available for, I stand corrected if I’m wrong on that, but especially for a young player like him that’s disappointing.

“There were times where he has been available and Dyche has said all of these things and then picked players ahead of him, including last season for a long time, Ben Godfrey a natural centre-back.

“Is Seamus Coleman still the first team right-back when available? He’s another one who missed a lot of football in recent years so you’ve got him, Ashley Young who he seems to hold a lot of stock in and even James Garner coming into the equation now.

“I really don’t know, the proof will be in the pudding won’t it in these coming weeks. He seems to be available, Dyche just says it’s all about match fitness now.

“It is an interesting one, if he does [have a future at Everton] he’s going to have to make a big impression between now and the end of the season, regardless of whether it’s Sean Dyche or someone else I guess in charge next season.”

What has happened to Everton defender Nathan Patterson at Goodison Park?

Patterson has never quite managed to hit the heights expected of him in Toffees colours because of a combination of both poor form and injury.

On the face of it, the Scotsman should have a free run at the right-back position once he returns to full fitness as he is up against the ageing pair of Coleman and Young, but it hasn’t proven to be that simple.

As Beesley suggested, Dyche has preferred to play centre-backs out of position or veteran defenders before he would turn to Patterson.

Whether that will change this season remains to be seen, however, there is no guarantee the Scottish international will slot back into the fold immediately.

If he spends another season as little more than a rotation option, the right-back could well be on his way out of Merseyside.

There will come a point where the Toffees’ hierarchy grows tired of waiting for him to finally fulfil his potential and instead opts to cash in. It is down to him to show that he is worth keeping around.
