Micah Richards has explained why he thinks it’s critical for Everton to sign a striker before the end of the transfer window.
There’s a lot of movement at Goodison Park right now as they push to make more signings before the window shuts. One of those could be Barcelona youngster Vitor Roque, although they’ll face competition (Sport, 16 August).
Either way, they’re in need of more firepower – as noted by Richards during an episode of The Rest is Football podcast (16 August, 17:00), with the baffled Sky Sports pundit questioning why a central striker has not been signed this summer.
“I just don’t know why Everton just don’t sign a striker. (Dominic) Calvert-Lewin is a good player, we’ve seen that when he’s fit but is he going to be available all season with his record? I’ve been there, I’ve been injured, so I’m not being disrespectful but once your body picks up stuff it’s hard then to keep it going throughout the full season,” he said.
“Just buy a top – well I’m not gonna say a top striker – but they’ve spent what £50million in this window? Just go get a striker that can keep you up. I think they’ve shown – losing (Amadou) Onana isn’t great – but their midfield and defence can keep it tight with the amount of clean sheets they had last season. But there’s so many times I’ve watched Everton and they couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net. So I say avoid relegation but just tight again.”
Can Everton trust Dominic Calvert-Lewin?
Putting your trust in a striker can be one of the hardest things a club can do. From dry spells to injuries, you never quite know where you stand. When it comes to Calvert-Lewin, he’s certainly a fan favourite. Still, if Newcastle push forward with a bid as suggested, supporters wouldn’t miss the unpredictability he brings.
After scoring 16 goals in 33 Premier League appearances in the 2020/21 campaign, Calvert-Lewin was ready to reach that next level. Unfortunately, it hasn’t quite happened. Due to injuries, he played just 17 games in both of the next two seasons. He did get back to 32 matches in 2023/24, but scored just seven goals in that time (FBref).
In short, we think Richards is right. Sean Dyche needs another player up top with real flair who can bring others into the game and create something out of nothing. No, players like that don’t grow on trees, but there’s enough of a pool out there for the Toffees to work with.
In other Everton news, Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher were left in stitches after what they said about the Toffees.
