King surprised as long-term Tottenham target agrees terms for £34m transfer elsewhere

Bryan King cannot believe that long-term Tottenham target Conor Gallagher is being allowed to leave Chelsea.

The ex-Spurs scout feels that the midfielder would have benefited from a move to North London.

Gallagher has been a long-term target for Ange Postecoglou’s side (The Evening Standard, 19 June).

However, as per Fabrizio Romano via X (5 August), the 24-year-old has verbally agreed personal terms to join Atletico Madrid as part of a £34million transfer.

And King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has criticised Spurs for not acting quicker.

“I’m surprised Chelsea are allowing Gallagher to leave,” King said.

“With a brand-new manager at the club, I would have thought they would want to keep hold of a player of that calibre and with that level of experience.

“However, Gallagher has been of interest to several clubs. Spurs would have been a great move for him.

“Although for some reason, Tottenham seem to be dragging their heels in the transfer window. They are failing to act on several deals. Whether they’re trying to hold out for lower fees, I am not sure.”

Ange Postecoglou to miss out on long-term Tottenham target Conor Gallagher

There have been constant rumblings of Gallagher making the move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

As a result, it is clear that Ange Postecoglou was keen on the player. Therefore, the Australian will be just as frustrated as anybody to see that Gallagher is close to a move to Spain.

And for £34million, it feels like Spurs might have missed out on a potential bargain.

Chelsea would have no doubt charged more to sell the midfielder to a direct rival. However, even if the fee was somewhere between £40million and £50million, it still feels like Tottenham might have been getting a good deal.

However, it appears they have missed out, which means it is therefore back to the drawing board.

In other Tottenham news, one player let Postecoglou down after what he did in a pre-season friendly.
