Keith Jackson drops 'Lottery Win' verdict amid Rangers transfer links

Lawrence Shankland will pay for himself “10 times over” if Rangers can strike a deal for the Hearts forward, Keith Jackson has said.

The Gers are planning on submitting a player-plus-cash offer for the 28-year-old striker, according to the Daily Record, with Shankland now entering the final 12 months of his contract at Tynecastle.

Shankland has been on the radar at Ibrox for a while now, having been linked during the January transfer window, and many are keen for Philippe Clement to replace Cyriel Dessers in the starting XI.

Writing for the Daily Record on Wednesday (24 July), Jackson said: “If Rangers sign Lawrence Shankland then, he’ll not only fire them to the league title, but he’ll pay for himself 10 times over with a Champions League lottery win.

The Hearts striker has been one of the most impressive players in the Scottish Premiership over the past few seasons, having racked up 59 goals and 12 assists in 94 appearances since July 2022.

Clement’s side, on the other hand, have struggled for an out-and-out striker figure since Alfredo Morelos’ departure, and even he could not be totally relied upon due to his hot-headedness on the pitch.

Despite scoring 22 goals in all competitions during his first season in Scotland, Dessers has continuously been slammed for his lack of clinical nature in front of goal and has been linked with an exit already.

Cagliari are one of the teams interested in signing the 29-year-old on loan, according to Football Italia [9 July], but the player’s recent comments would suggest he is staying put at Ibrox this summer.

With Danilo hopefully set to return from a long-standing injury, Sam Lammers turning down a move away from Ibrox [Scottish Sun, 21 July], and Hamza Igamane being added to the squad, there may not be room for Shankland any longer.

The Hearts man would likely be the best striker for the Gers if he were to make the switch to Ibrox, and with Champions League qualification matches on the horizon, the team needs plenty of depth.

However, Clement looks to have already made his improvements in the final third of the pitch. It could be a case of waiting until next season and signing the player on a free transfer at the end of his contract.
