James Tavernier still has a “lot to offer” at Rangers beyond the end of the summer transfer window, according to Gordan Daziel.

The Light Blues skipper has been linked with a move away from Ibrox, with reports suggesting Trabzonspor has already made another offer to try and prize him away from Glasgow [Rangers Review, 23 July].

Although Clyde 1 pundit Dalziel admits the Light Blues may be able to cash in on the 32-year-old, he doesn’t appear to be convinced that selling Tavernier will be the Gers’ best decision this summer.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (22 July) he said: “The amount of goals and assists, if you’re a centre-forward and Tavernier’s coming down the right-hand side, you’ve got a better chance of scoring as well.

“I just think Tavernier brings so much to Rangers with everything that he produces, he can score goals. You’re right, he likes to be involved in everything, his set plays are usually spot-on and penalty kicks he has been excellent at penalty kicks, and he’s had enough practice.

“I just think sometimes you look and you go, he’s 32, he’s getting to the end of his career and can Rangers get decent money for him? That’s another big question mark.

“I just think Tavernier has still got a lot to offer.”

Will James Tavernier exit Rangers amid Trabzonspor transfer speculation?

Tavernier’s exit, if it happens, is always going to split supporters. Some will claim he is a serial loser who has underachieved in Glasgow, while others will say he was lumbered with teams that were nowhere near as good as Celtic sides at the time.

The truth is likely somewhere in the middle. Tavernier has given his all for the Gers, but he hasn’t managed to have the success on the field that either he or his supporters would have hoped for.

However, he also scored a lot of goals last season and while his defensive work was criticised, he did manage to have a major impact in the final third that simply cannot be undervalued.

His goals and assist will need replacing if he does depart this summer.

That won’t be easy to do, especially when funds are limited for Philippe Clement and his staff, but it will have to happen for the Premiership to return to Ibrox.
