Keith Wyness drops 'blockbuster' Rangers transfer update

Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted Rangers are not capable of making “blockbuster” signings.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed Ibrox chiefs will continue to focus on “uncovering gems” from smaller leagues.

According to Transfermarkt, Rangers’ last £5million+ signing was the capture of Danilo from Feyenoord last summer (2023).

Philippe Clement’s side made eight signings this summer but could not qualify for the Champions League proper and will instead play in this season’s Europa League.

The summer transfer window slams shut on Friday (30 August) at 11pm.

Rangers can’t make ‘blockbuster’ signings, says Wyness

Wyness claimed Rangers must undertake a “strategic rebuild” over the next 12 months to close the gap to rivals Celtic.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “They’ll have some budget in reserve.

“But it isn’t going to be much. They’ll only be looking at international players from smaller leagues, trying to uncover some gems.

“Celtic and Rangers have done that before, so I’m not saying it can’t be done.

“But it isn’t blockbuster signings, that’s for sure.

“They’ll be in a different market.

“They have to strengthen this squad, but it has to be with a view to a strategic rebuilding over the next 12 months.”
