Aberdeen’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted refinancing at Rangers is simply “putting a band-aid” on “serious issues” at the club.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Aberdeen between 2000 and 2004, had lengthy spells as the chief of Everton and Aston Villa and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – accused interim chairman John Gilligan and other Rangers board members of “putting their head in the sand and ignoring the problems”.

Speaking at Rangers’ AGM on 5 December, Gilligan said the club’s board will be “reconfigured and refreshed” after its members have provided funding over the past 10 years.

He added that the structure has “served the club well” and refinancing is ongoing at Ibrox.

In their latest accounts for the 2023-24 season, Rangers’ net losses increased by £4.1million to £17.2million across the period.

On the pitch, Philippe Clement’s side are already 11 points behind rivals Celtic – who made a profit for 2023-24 after dominating the Gers in recent years.

Rangers refinancing is ‘not enough’, says Wyness

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I don’t think it’s enough to refinance.

“This came from the AGM, where everyone was putting their head in the sand and ignoring the problems.

“I think Rangers didn’t want to wash their dirty laundry in public, that’s why things weren’t as fiery as they should have been.

“It’s a club with some serious issues.

“Those issues are at the very top level, and need to be fixed.

“Rangers need to resolve the chairman position and there needs to be new investment in the club.

“Refinancing would just put a band-aid on things, they need someone to come in from overseas.

“They’ve got to restart the whole thing, as I’ve been saying for weeks. I think a lot of people would agree with me, including Rangers fans. It’s gone beyond just putting a band-aid on the problems.”
